Ruling on a woman travelling without a mahram



Question

What is the ruling on a woman travelling without a mahram because her work requires that of her?

Answer

It is haraam because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “No woman should travel without a mahram.” This was narrated by Ahmad from the hadeeth of ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) in his Musnad. Even if her work requires that of her, we say that if she cannot find a mahram then she should not travel.

How did the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) cast lots among his wives when he wanted to travel?

Question Many hadith mention the practice of casting lots during the time of the Prophet (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). For example, when deciding which of the wives will accompany the Prophet on a journey, they would cast lots. Do we know how the casting of lots was done? Were the names pulled from a bowl, for example? If my husband takes a second wife, will I be rewarded?

Question What is the reward, "ajr", for the first wife having patience ,"sabr", when her husband takes a second wife? Is there a special reward in this case, or is it the same reward for all women who obey their husbands and make their religious duties? If I would get to know about a special reward, things would be easier to accept. Someone said that the reward for this kind of woman was more than the reward for a mu´min leaving for jihad.
